Last year, around this time, I wrote a goodbye note to a dear friend for her mom to read her while she laid on her death bed, fighting cancer, as she had been for a few years. She taught me my first lessons of loss, of losing a friend. August also marks the passing of my husband’s mentor, who taught us both so much in the realm of spirituality, psychedelia, and the deep unknown. For the Deadheads, August is a time of mourning mixed with celebration, as we remember the life and death of Jerry Garcia. With just 8 days between his birthday and ascension day (someone once referred to their friends’ death date as an ascension day, which I’ve grown quite fond of) it’s hard not to think of the formidable event we’ll all eventually succumb to… death. Beyond that, my community is mourning, too. It seems like each day there’s a new post or story memorializing someone who has also ascended. As someone who tried various methods to combat my lingering anxiety and depression, I know how it feels to live disconnected and unfulfilled. After a rock bottom experience in my early 20s, I chose to prioritize healing honestly and with intention. My less-than-ideal experiences with psychiatrists and stuffy therapists led me to exploring more holistic methods. With the support of my new community and encouraged by my mentor, I started manifesting my dream partner, home, and career as a full-time artist. Living this awakened life has led me to where I am now, and empowered me to step into my role as a healer and guide, something I’ve always felt called toward. It is important to acknowledge that my teachings are not solely my own. Many of the healing practices that have aided in my transformation are rooted in indigenous wisdom. An essential part of my practice is recognizing those who have come before us, and actively working against the systems of oppression that seek to cause harm and diminish their worth.
